Embark on a Cuyuna Adventure: A Complete Guide to a weekend in Crosby, Minnesota

Paddling Pennington Mine Lake- Cuyuna Recreation Area. Crosby, Minnesota

Pennington Mine Lake- Cuyuna Recreation Area. Crosby, Minnesota

Nestled in the heart of Minnesota's Cuyuna Iron Range, Crosby is a charming town with a rich history and a vibrant present. Originally established as a mining community in the early 1900s, Crosby thrived as an integral part of the region's iron ore industry. The town's growth was fueled by the demand for iron during the expansion of the American industrial landscape.

As the mining industry gradually declined in the mid-20th century, Crosby faced economic challenges. However, the resilient spirit of its residents led to a remarkable transformation in recent years. The closure of mines paved the way for the creation of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, transforming the once-industrial landscape into a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, specifically mountain bikers.

Today, Crosby has become a haven for both history enthusiasts, adventure seekers and those looking for a charming main street scene with high quality food, drink and shopping outside of the Twin Cities and beyond. The remnants of the mining era, such as the Croft Mine Historical Park, offer a glimpse into the town's past, while the serene Cuyuna Lakes and scenic trails attract hikers, bikers, and nature lovers.

Mountain Biking around Yawkey Mine Lake

While you’ll find me riding, Mahnomen: Beginner Bicycle Skills Area Loop or Skills Loop & Intro to Galloping Goose true thrill seekers or advanced riders will be cruising Cruser’s Kettle an almost 8 mile trail that is rated the hardest trail in the Cuyuna Recreation range and it meant for experienced riders.

Looking to find the right trails for you? My friends at Cuyuna Adventure Town put together a whole guide so you can find a trail that’s just your speed.

Paddle on the Crystal-Clear Mine Lakes:

Mountain Biking not your thing? No worries you can also explore the mine lakes by paddle, reveling in the tranquility of the pristine waters surrounded by the remnants of the town's mining history. The mines can have clarity up to forty feet down and Cuyuna Outfitters in town rents both glass bottom kayaks and paddle boards for you to explore and take advantage of the crystal clear waters.

Morning Brew at Red Raven:

Red Raven Bike + Coffee Shop, Crosby MN

Red Raven Bike + Coffee Shop, Crosby MN

No trip to Crosby is complete with out a kickstart to your day with the aromatic flavors of Red Raven's carefully crafted coffee. This local hotspot offers a cozy atmosphere and a perfect spot to plan your day's adventures. You can sit inside or out, but I do highly recommend the Sandhog (Salted Caramel Latte) and the breakfast burrito which is loaded with black beans, veggies, gauc, cheese and eggs.

Late lunch run at Cuyuna Brewing and Burritos California:

Seltzer from Cuyuna Brewing Co.

Seltzer from Cuyuna Brewing Co.

After a morning of exploring Burritos California and Cuyuna Brewing have you covered. Connected to eachother you can grab a burrito, tacos, chips and salsa or a burrito bowl and take it over to the brewery for lunch and a brew (or seltzer or NA beverage). The taproom is kid and pet friendly (with some guide rules) and is a fun atmosphere to eat, drink and maybe meet a new friend who’s traveling for the weekend or a local who will give you fun tips for exploring! Don’t forget to stay and play one of their board games.
Pro-Tip: Not hungry or had lunch at your Airbnb? Stop for a drink and grab chips and salsa from Burritos California which is only $2. You can’t beat that!

Retail Therapy on Main Street – Lake and Co, Cuyuna Outfitters:

Wander down Main Street and explore the unique boutiques like Lake and Co and Cuyuna Outfitters. From outdoor gear to locally crafted treasures, these stores offer an eclectic shopping experience. Lake and Co. just opened their brick and mortar permenantly in the summer of 2023 but they also have locations around Minnesota like Grand Rapids and Stillwater.

Dining Delights at Iron Range Eatery or Rafferty's Pizza:

PRO-TIP

In the summer, Rafferty’s has a roof top patio, just walk to the back of the restaurant and you’ll see a stair case. It overlooks Cana Wine Bar, & you can see Main Street and Serpent Lake!

- As the evening approaches, savor the local flavors at Iron Range Eatery or indulge in the cheesy goodness of Rafferty's Pizza. For a town of just over 2,000 the food and drink options are extensive and delicious. Looking for something a little more sit-down/upscale Iron Range Eatery is the place.

Don’t worry we're not talking dress up, it’s still down to earth and fits the vibe of town but this is going to be the place if you’re looking for nicer dinner specials and cocktails. Traveling with the family, just looking for a quick bite or craving pizza? Rafferty’s is the place. Known for unique combinations like the Loaded Baked Potato Pizza and Feisty Pig, which are both very good but my go to is always the Taco Pizza!

Sunset (or Rise for you Early Birds) from Miners Mountain:

Venture to Miners Mountain to witness a mesmerizing sunset that bathes the Cuyuna Lakes landscape in warm hues. It's a perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures. The overlook is the highest point in the Cuyuna Recreation area overlooking multiple mine lakes. There is also a road that leads up to the top, some bike or walk but it can be driven- making it one of the most accessible viewpoints in the Cuyuna area.

9. Active Recreation with Pickleball at Get Pickled-Ball:

Engage in some lively sportsmanship by playing pickleball next to the Trailside Restaurant. It's a fun and social activity for all ages, adding an active twist to your Crosby escapade. This is perfect for winter, shoulder seasons, a rainy day or just something fun and active for those in your group who may not be looking for the thrill of mountain biking or paddling!

One hour of playtime is $20 and can be reserved over the phone or online. You can even pay with Venmo making it super easy to get out on the court!

10. Victual Stroll and Sweet Treat Finale:

Meander through the unique goods store, Victual, and cap off your day with a delectable ice cream treat. It's a sweet ending to a day filled with exploration and adventure. Each of their ice creams are lactose free but don’t lack in flavor- check out unique flavors like Church Basement Lemon Bar, Baklava, or Chai Spice. Don’t worry they have the classics too! Victual is also your home base to create the perfect charcuterie board with handcrafted meats, cheeses and toppings, as well as, the self proclaimed ‘smallest liquor store in the state!’. It’s worth a quick visit, but you’ll likely find yourself roaming the newly expanded store for more than a minute or two.

Bonus: The Cuyuna Crusher - A Mountain Biking Extravaganza:

Don't miss the chance to witness or participate in the Cuyuna Crusher, an annual mountain biking event that has earned accolades as the 'MNMBS Best Race.' Experience the thrill as bikers of all levels converge in the Mahnomen Unit of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. In 2024, the race will be held August 25th and is a great way to end your summer vacation!
