Wisconsin Cabin with Hot Tub & Sauna: Birdhouse Wisconsin

Birdhouse Wisconsin

Birdhouse Exterior & Sauna

When choosing a family vacation or couples getaway it can be overwhelming trying to find a place that has something for everyone. Hotels vs. Airbnbs, do they have added amenities, is it a central location to hiking, shops and restaurants it can feel like a job just to plan your trip. Located in Dundee, Wisconsin an easy road trip from Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul: Birdhouse Wisconsin really does really check all the boxes. I’ve had the opportunity to stay and photograph many Airbnb’s in my career and the attention to detail and guest experience here truly is unmatched.

Front Door & Bird House

Nestled amidst the ice trail landscapes of Wisconsin, Dundee offers a charming retreat that is conveniently accessible from several major cities in the Midwest. Situated approximately 60 miles northeast of Madison, a drive that typically takes about 1.5 hours, and just over 50 miles north of Milwaukee, reachable in about an hour's drive. It's also around 130 miles north of Chicago, making it a manageable 2 to 2.5-hour drive from the Windy City. Making Birdhouse an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful getaway, where rolling hills and lake views provide a backdrop for relaxation and outdoor activities or hang out at the cabin soaking in the hot tub, relaxing watching a moving on the projector or heating up in the sauna. Whether you're exploring nearby attractions or simply unwinding, Dundee promises an escape.

The Cabin

We stayed at Birdhouse in early summer and it was truly the perfect time. Warm days, coffee mornings on the deck, but still cool enough to soak in the hot tub in the evening to warm up. Birdhouse is located on five acres of land, just out of town and right down the road from SoLu Winery. Perfect out of the city getaway but also with luxury amenities and a quality coffee, shop, restaurants and events near by.

Inside Birdhouse, they have two bedrooms a queen bed bedroom on the main floor and a bedroom in the loft that is oversized with a record player, chair, dresser, and a king bed that has an opening that overlooks the living room, but with a barn door that can be closed off for privacy as well. Upstairs they also have a stackable washer and dryer that guests are allowed to use which is very nice for after going into the sauna and hot tub, nearby lakes or just for a quick load if you are staying for a longer trip.

Aside from the amenities one thing I absolutely loved was their commitment to the Birdhouse theme. Inside is like a scavenger hunt trying to find the birdhouses and bird themed items throughout the house. From the custom bird paintings on the wall, birdhouse decor and birdhouses outside that promise a nature filled retreat.

Each morning we woke up in the early summer with new colors of flowers that fill the property from yellows, to whites and orgeans you feel immersed in nature. While there are other homes on the road that Birdhouse is located on, between the trees, flowers and land is feels peaceful and tucked away. It was the perfect time to make a cup with the French press, sit on the deck and watch the sun come up over the prairie in their backyard.

For the kids: if you have littles the basement bedroom isn’t big enough to fit a portacib or a toddler bed so note that your kids will have to sleep on the big bed, your kids bed will have to be upstairs in the primary with you or you’ll sleep downstairs with the kids upstarts. Not at dealbreaker at all, just something to be aware of if you’re booking!

Things We Loved:
- Hot Tub, Sauna and Outdoor Shower- I feel like I don’t even need to explain this one more. How many Airbnb’s do you know that offer ALL THREE?!

- Full kitchen- as much as we like exploring the local area’s coffee shops and restaurants, we also love making our own meals so having all the kitchen amenities was a great bonus. We grilled and made vegetable kabobs and they had everything we needed to prepare great meals!

- Projector Screen & Fireplace- after a full day playing outside, it was so fun to pull down the projector screen and have a movie night in the living room with the gas fireplace going. Such a unique amenity, it felt like a movie theater!

- Oversized Loft Bedroom- when we’re traveling one of us often times has to work, so having a space tucked away is very important for us and a great addition to this stay!

- Luxury Bathroom- Airbnb hosts have been stepping up the bathroom game and I’m here for it, from custom tiles to luxury bath products!

- Nature-Filled- our daughter could have spent hours sitting on the swinging chair out front watching the birds in the birdhouses, and Matt and I loved sitting out by the fire pit as fireflies filled the air after the sunset. It really felt like a luxury nature retreat!

3 Things to Do in Dundee, Wisconsin:

1. Burgers and Ice Cream from Hamburger Haus: note the burgers here are a great price and the ice cream is HUGE. A baby cone is like two scoops and a large is seven. You’ve been warned.

2. Wine & Live Music at SoLu Winery: while they have seating inside the real star of the show is their outside patio with music stage, multiple bars, lawn games, food truck and more. Be sure to get a flight to try multiple flavors of their house made wine.

3. Hike the Kettle Moraine State Forest: Pets are welcome in Wisconsin State Parks but must be on a leash and under control at all times. Certain areas may be off-limits to pets. Visitors can swim at three beaches, enjoy challenging mountain biking trails or groomed ski trails, hike the Ice Age Trail, take in a nature program, or just escape among 30,000 acres of rolling, wooded hills and prairies.
